Vellanad is a village in Thiruvananthapuram district in the state of Kerala, India.[2][3]

K.Viswanathan's prestigious NGO institution Mitraniketan is one of the organizations that work in close association with DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency) and is located in Vellanad. It is dedicated to educating rural and tribal children and to vocational training for adults. It has volunteers from around the world in medical and educational positions. Shri K. Viswanathan was awarded the Padma Shri award for social work in 2009. Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India.
