Vasil Shanto

Vasil Shanto (1913–1944) was an Albanian communist leader and a hero of World War II.

Biography

Shanto was born in 1913, in the village of Vrakë.[1]

Shanto studied at the Qemal Stafa High School[2] He was one of the leaders of Shkodër communist group and one of the founders of Albanian Communist Party.[3] He gave a huge contribute in organizing the resistance units, and recruiting patriotic figures into the National Movement. Serving as an emissary of Albanian Communist Party, he was sent several times abroad, keeping ties with other regional communist organizations, especially with the Yugoslavian Communist Party. He was killed in action on 1 February 1944, in a skirmish with Nazi forces.[4]
