Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), is a medical college, situated in New Delhi. It is attached with the famous Safdarjang Hospital for clinical teaching.[1] The college is running under the umbrella of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was established at Safdarjung Hospital (One of the largest hospitals in India, started during the period of second world war) in November 2001. Padma Shree Dr. Jagdish Prasad is the founder Principal of the college.[2]

History

The first batch of MBBS students joined the college in February 2002 and they have completed their MBBS and postgraduation from the different departments. More than 10 batches have joined till now. The college has recognition by the Medical Council of India. The college is also included in the World directory of Medical Schools and Avicenna directory of Medicine.

Affiliation

The college is affiliated to Guru Govind Singh I P University, Delhi. From 2008 onwards the post graduate courses are also affiliated to GGSIPU University which were with Delhi University till now.[3]

Infrastructure

Although the college began on a very modest note on infrastructure carved out of the portions of the Safdarjang Hospital, today it is housed in a state of art centrally air-conditioned building . The college has a separate Library building with excellent collection of Medical books, Journals and Internet facility. Not only with regard to material infrastructure, the college has a very competent faculty in the pre, para clinical and clinical disciplines.[4]

Faculties

The faculty consists of over 295 doctors who are highly qualified in their respective fields, possessing post-graduate qualifications. It is needless to emphasize that large number of the faculty members are of national and international repute with research papers, books publication and editorship of the journals to their credit. Some of the faculty members are the members of the executive bodies of the National/international Association/Academy and few of them are holding elected offices of the president of such associations. A large number of training workshops (including WHO workshops), CME’s seminars are being conducted here. Research activities of the highest order are under taken in all the disciplines of medicine and our institute is a centre for the research projects of ICMR, CSIR and WHO in some of the departments.

College Festival

Nirvana is the official annual literary, socio-cultural and sports festival of Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi.[5]

First started in the year 2004 that saw celebrities like the band Indian Ocean, Toshi perform for a crowd that consisted of medical students from all across the country as well as non medical students and invitees from colleges affiliated to the Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and others i.e. over 300 different institutes. The conveniently located college premises attracts students from fellow medical colleges for example, the neighboring All India Institute of Medical Sciences, students from NITs and IITs to students from other states across India who indulge in the various events that include among others- Fashion Show, Band Competition, Literary event and performances by celebrities.
