Valley Primary School

Valley Primary School is a primary academy school (Year Reception to Year 6) in Bromley, London, United Kingdom. The head teacher is Mr John Brown. The school was the sixth best school in Bromley according to The Times newspaper annual school rankings.

House system

Like many schools, Valley Primary School also follows the house system. The four houses are Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury.

Awards

History

The school was erected by Bromley School Board and opened in 1891. The Board held an architectural competition in 1888/9 to select a suitable design.[1] The award winning scheme - submitted anonymously under the name 'Kent' was selected in 1889; the competition adjudictor was leading London School Board architect E R Robson (1835–1917).[2]

However, complaints were received that the winning scheme contravened the competition specifications and were prepared by someone employed in Robson's office. The winning scheme was thus disqualified and the remaining submissions revisited by a new adjudicator.

The design submitted under the name 'Bromley' was subsequently approved. It was by Evelyn Arthur Hellicar (1862–1929) and Sydney Vacher (1854–1934). Evelyn Hellicar was the son of the Rev. Arthur Greasley Hellicar (1835–1905), Vicar of Bromley who also happened to be the Chairman of Bromley School Board.

The school was built on land belonging to Pixfield, Beckenham Lane, Bromley. The owner of Pixfield, Mr Robinson Latter, insisted on a number of conditions prior to the sale of the site. These dictated the basic form of the school.

The school gained academy status on 1 August 2011.
