Vallam is a panchayat town in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Vallam is located at 10°43′N 79°05′E / 10.72°N 79.08°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 75 metres (246 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Vallam had a population of 14,495. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%. Vallam has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 69%. In Vallam, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tamil Nadu born in Vallam, Thanjavur Justice G. M. Akbar Ali Birth Place: Hon’ble Justice G.M. Akbar Ali, was born on 23 November 1952 at Vallam, Thanjavur District. Education:He underwent Elementary Education at St. Moses Elementary School at Thiruvarur and High School Education at St. Antony’s High School, Thanjavur. He completed B.Sc. Degree at Jamal Mohamed College at Thiruchirappalli in the year 1973. After a brief visit to Singapore to look after the business of his father, he came to Madras and completed Law Course and obtained B.L. ‘Degree during 1977.

Appointed:He joined the office of Mr. Habibullah Basha, Senior Advocate former Advocate General, Public Prosecutor. He practiced in City Civil Court, Metropolitan Magistrate Courts, Small Causes Courts and in the High Court, Madras till 1982. He later shifted practice to Thanjavur in 1982 and practiced under Thiru. R. Jayaraman, Advocate, Thanjavur for a brief period and established independent practice.He was selected as a Sub-Judge (Civil Judge Senior Division) for the first time in 1989. 'He served as Sub Judge at Chengalpattu, Thirupathur, and Vellore Districts. He was promoted as District Judge in the year 1997 and posted as Additional District Judge at Salem. He worked as Chief Judicial Magistrate at Krishnagiri and then as Principal District Judge till he was transferred to Pondicherry and posted as Chief Judge, Pondicherry. He rendered remarkable service as Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority during 2003-2005 and during 2006-2008 for two terms.

He was also the Director of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy. During his tenure as the Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority during 2003-05 and during 2006-08, the legal aid moment got a quantum leap in Tamil Nadu. He implemented “Micro Legal Literacy Scheme” which is now being implemented throughout the nation by NALSA. He was appointed as Member Secretary, NALSA, and the first South Indian Judicial Officer to be appointed and continued to hold this post till his elevation as Additional Judge of Madras High Court on 31.03.2009.

Vallam has the distinction of producing the 1st rank candidate of the 1st IAS batch of Independent India-Mr.G.Ramachandran first son of Shri N.K.Ganapathy Iyer of No.5 Rettai Agraharam. Mr.G Ramachandran has written a memoir, "Walking with the Giants".

Mosques

There are four mosques in central Vallam with traditional identity.

The first mosque, Eid Ka Masjid, is situated in the highest hill spot, some distance from the jummah- masjid and market arena. Every year, EID-UL-ALHA is held there. This mosque is over 150 year old.

One of the mosques, known as Mela Pallivasal, situated near anna statue near market arena, is build with white marble and beautiful structural designs. More than 100 years old, it is the oldest masjid in the village.

Jummah - masjid

Friday prayer is popular in Jummah - masjid near the bus stand terminal. EID-UL-FITHR(RAMZAN) celebrations are also one of the important aspects of this masjid as it is huge enough to hold thousands of devotees.

Another important aspect is the Tawakalshah-Durgah, a religious leader's graveyard, which has been in Vallam for more than hundred years and is popular among Muslims in and around the part of the area.

A new mosque in Vallam was opened for prayer in July 2013. This mosque has a capacity of 100 members to pray at a time and is located in the Anna Nagar area of Vallam.

Big church

A traditional Christian church, over 50 years old, is located near bus stand. The church has a famous history with a school associated with it.

Ekavuri Amman Temple

Ekavuri Amman is a 1000-2000 year old temple in Vallam.
