Vërnicë (Macedonian: Врница or Врбница) is a village in the Trebisht Municipality of the Dibër District, within Dibër County in northeastern Albania. It is situated with in the Golo Brdo region, near the border with the Republic of Macedonia.

History

A demographic survey of the population of the village, done in 1873, recorded the village has having 30 households with 97 male Christian residents.[1]

During the Balkan Wars, two men from the village joined the Macedonian-Adrianopolitan Volunteer Corps.[2]

Elez Koçi was killed in the village in 1916 by Bulgarian forces.[3]

Demographics

According to a 2007 estimate, Vërnicë's population was 548.[4]

Macedonian is spoken in the village.[5] Instruction in Macedonian was permitted twice in Vërnicë since becoming part of Albania, once during World War I and again during the late 1940s.[6]
