Uttara University (Bengali: উত্তরা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or (UU) is a private university at Uttara, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. UU has eight campuses in a one-kilometer radius in Uttara, and another campus in Mirpur-1.

Location

Uttara University's main campus is located on House # 04 & 05, Road # 15, Sector # 06, Uttara Model Town, Uttara, Dhaka-1230. Mirpur Campus is on Robiul Tower, Mirpur Housing State, Plot No # C-1/Kh, Section # 1, Mirpur-1, Dhaka.

History

Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, founder of Uttara University, a former Economic Advisor of the US Embassy (Dhaka), a renowned academician of the country and an eminent Economist of international repute, alumni of Vanderbilt University, a Nobel Laureate School in USA, possesses ingenuity in national education platform that benefits the students who want to build up their sustainable career in modern global market. In this spirit, Dr. Rahman formed a set of learning institutions where meritorious and enthusiastic students are benefited by using their merit with qualitative ingredients which are offered by this institution.

Uttara University began its journey with the hand of DAR TRUST. The members of DAR TRUST are educationists, industrialists, economists and businessmen of eminence and recognition. Along with Dr. M Azizur Rahman, Dr Eaysmin Ara Lekha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Uttara University, is the co-founder of Uttara University and the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustee. Dr M. Azizur Rahman is the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Syndicate of Uttara University while Nabid Aziz and Abid Aziz are members of the Trustee Board.

Uttara University is approved by the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and by University Grants Commission (UGC). UU aims at quality education. The university has been established under the private University Act of 1992 and the amendment to this Act in 1998. UU is also recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university has been successfully in operation since 2003.

Convocation

The first convocation of Uttara University was held on 16 June 2009. The chancellor of Uttara University and the honorable president of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh Md. Zillur Rahman presided over the convocation program. In the convocation program 1088 graduate and undergraduate students received their certificate. Professor A. A. M. S. Arefin Siddique, vice chancellor of Dhaka University was scheduled as the convocation speaker.

The Second convocation of Uttara University was held on 4 July 2011.

Uttara University organized the third convocation. It will be held on 26 August 2014.

Academic structure

Uttara University is organized into five schools and fourteen departments. The university offers 25 programs in undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its academic structure is as follows:

Financial and academic facilities

UU provides scholarships for meritorious students and special financial support to poor students.

UU has two libraries, computer laboratories, digital laboratory, English language laboratory, physics laboratory and other facilities.
