Uthukottai is a border town and panchayat town in Tamil Nadu next to Andhra Pradesh, on the banks of the Arani river. It has a channel which helps channel water from the Krishna river for irrigation in Tamil Nadu.

The Uthukottai name is a portmanteau of two Tamil words - Uthu and Kottai. Uthu means water coming from earth and Kottai represents the Muslim Zamindars Kottai located in that place.

The place called Suratapalli is near to Uthukottai where the famous Shiva temple is located. This is the only place in the world where God Shiva is with goddess Paarvathi in sleeping posture.

Uthukottai is located between Chennai and Tirupathi.

Demographics

In the 2001 India census, Uthukkottai had a population of 10,639. Males constituted 50% of the population and females 50%. Uthukkottai had an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 76%, and female literacy was 59%. In 2001 in Uthukkottai, 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.[1]

In the 2011 census, Uthukkottai recorded 12,623 inhabitants.[2]

Developments

Uthukottai is well connected with Chennai by bus . Every 15–30 minutes there is a bus from CMBT towards Uthukottai. Now, it is well connected with MTC services also.As it is developed with an National Highway, this road is mostly preferred by pilgrims who travel to Thrupathi and Srikalahasti.This is the shortcut route to travel to Thirupathi from Chennai.

A green place with excellent nature. Nature can be enjoyed a lot here.Lots of good and famous places are situated nearby Uthukottai.This Place is one of the Gateway to Tamil Nadu as Uthukottai is located in border between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

There are two Matric Higher Secondary Schools namely Vivekananda MHSS and Don Bosco MHSS. Also there are Govt Boys HSS and Govt Girls HSS along with Kothandaraman High School.

Recently a Teacher Training Institute was opened there which is a sister concern of Vivekananda MHSS.

Southern Railways is planning to have a train track through Uthukottai to connect Ponneri and Renigunta at the shortest possible distance.

Uthukottai having the basic facilities like Registrar office, Sub-court, Taluk Office, DSP office and Subjail.

In the last Assembly elections the BJP candidate contested for Gummidipoondi constituency Mr. Radavarapu Narasaiah Chowdary was from Uthukottai only.

And also there are two cinema theatres namely Sri Kumari Theatre and AVM Theatre are located. Sri Kumari Theatre providing the high technology system Digital Sound (DTS) and Digital Cinema (UFO) for audience to entertain well.

Uthukottai is well connected to Chennai, Bangalore and Thirupati. You can take a bus from Chennai-CMBT towards Thiruvallur, from there you have more number of buses to Uthukkottai.

Hospitals: Uthukottai is important Medical designation for 50 and more villages. It has a Govt Hospital and 10+ Private Clinics to provide medical services to localities. Julia Hospital is located near DonBosco School, which is under a Christian trust and it is multispeciality hospital. Their motto is to serve for urban people.

Uthukottai is well business town. It has a SHARMARKET BROKERS , SHAREKHAN FRENCHEIES, VARSHA SILKS , Sujatha Traders, Pannerselvam electricals, Venkateswara Textiles and more than 200 shops.
