Urappakkam is located in a suburb of south-west Chennai metro city and census town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The population was 13,445 during the 2001 Indian census.The population has increased significantly to 29,122 in 2011.

Urappakkam is a fast-growing locality among the southern urbs of Chennai. Urappakkam is located in Kancheepuram District. It is situated on the busy National Highway 45. It is situated between Tambaram and Chengalpattu at a distance of 8 km from Tambaram and 21 km from Chengalpattu. The pincode for Urapakkam is 603202 (guduvancherry,karanai-puducherry) 603210 (Urapakkam East) and 603211(Urapakkam West). With the southern limit of Chennai Metropolitan Area expanded till Vandalur, Urapakkam has become the Gateway of South Chennai on GST Road.

Urappakkam is served by the Urappakkam railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network and has two bus stops.

Geography

Urappakkam is located near the city of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu. It belongs to the Kanchipuram District, Chengalpet Taluk. It is located between Vandalur and Guduvancheri. The railway line that runs through it separates the place into Urappakkam east and Urappakkam west. Urappakkam is bound on the western side by the Madambakkam and Adhanur villages, the eastern side by periyar nagar,Karanai-Puducheri(belong to karanaipuducheri panchyat) and Iyenchery villages(Part of Urappakkam Panchyat), the northern side by Vandalur, and the southern side by Guduvancheri. Also, it is very close to the fast-developing corridors like Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, SP Koil-Oragadam-Sriperumbudur Road, and the Outer Ring Road (Vandalur to Minjur). r The Urappakkam Panchayat belongs to the Kattankulathur Panchayat Union. The village that buffers Urappakkam with Guduvancheri is Nandivaram and the village that buffers Urappakkam with Vandalur is Otteri.tj

Civic Amenities

Urappakkam is supported by a fully functional electricity board and a village panchayat office. It has two sub post offices - one in east and the other is in west. Despite growth, some parts of Urappakkam lacks basic civic amenities such as water and good roads.
