Uns ist ein Kind geboren (Unto us a child is born), is a Christmas cantata which was formerly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach as his BWV 142, but was most likely composed by his predecessor in Leipzig, Johann Kuhnau, around 1720.[1]
Scoring and structure
The cantata is scored for three vocal soloists (alto, tenor and bass), a four-part choir, two recorders, two oboes, two violins, viola and continuo.[2]
The piece has eight movements:
- Sinfonia
- Chorus: Uns ist ein Kind geboren
- Aria (bass): Dein Geburtstag ist erschienen
- Chorus: Ich will den Namen Gottes loben
- Aria (tenor): Jesu, dir sei Dank
- Recitative (alto): Immanuel
- Aria (alto): Jesu, dir sei Preis
- Chorus: Alleluia
