The University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (University of Reims or URCA) is a French university, in the Academy of Reims. It was officially established in 1967, as the successor of Rheims University, one of the most important European universities of the Middle Ages, which was established in 1548 and closed in 1793.

History

First university

The University of Reims was created in 1548, thanks to the Cardinal of Lorraine, who intervened with the Pope Paul III. The 'Collège des Bons-Enfants' catholic school thus became a university, starting teaching the arts, theology, law and medicine. Closed in 1793 during the French Revolution, the university experienced an almost total eclipse period for a century and a half, and only reappeared in the sixties.

Modern university

The Faculty of Science (1961), the Literary University College (1964), the University College of Law and Economics (1966), Reims University Technology Institute (1966), the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy (1967), the National School of Dental Surgery (1970) are the successive elements from which the University of Reims was formed in 1971. The creation of an IUT in Troyes (1973), an Institute of Higher Technical Education (1985) and an IUT department (1995) in Charleville-Mezieres, the development of a delocalized office of the Faculties of Law, Economics and Humanities of Reims (1991) and the opening of an IUT department in Châlons-en-Champagne (1993) now show the regional roots of a university that has become, in 1982, ' University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne .
