University of Pennsylvania Economics Department
The Economics Department of the University of Pennsylvania (commonly referred to as Penn Economics) is part of the school's Arts and Sciences division. Its undergraduate program is one of the largest in the School of Arts and Sciences.[1] It also offers graduate courses leading to a Ph.D. in economics. Students enrolled in Wharton as undergraduates share some of the classes with students from the Economics Department, but the two degrees have otherwise separate curriculum. Penn Economics is generally associated with the freshwater school of economic thought (along with Minnesota, Rochester, MIT, NYU, Wisconsin, U of Toronto, and Western Ontario).
The Department houses the Penn Institute for Economic Research (PIER) and is also the editorial home of the International Economic Review, one of the leading general audience journals in economics.[2] Penn's Economics Department is currently ranked 9th in the United States by US News,[3] 8th in the world by ARWU, 10th in the world by Tilburg University,[4] and 16th in the world by IDEAS.[5]
