The School of Education is one of the academic units at the University of California, Irvine. The School states that it focuses on six core issues[1] in contemporary education:

History

The University of California, Irvine School of Education was established by the Regents of the University of California in 2012[2][3][4] The School began as the Office of Teacher Education in 1967[3][5] and became the Department of Education in 1991.[1]

Faculty

The School's interdisciplinary faculty includes psychologists, sociologists, economists, and linguists.[6] Four professors are members of the National Academy of Education.[7] One professor is a member of the National Academy of Science, [8] and one professor is a fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.[9] In total, the School has 24 senate faculty, 48 clinical faculty and lecturers, 28 professional and support staff, and 17 other affiliated faculty.[10]

Academic Programs

The School offers graduate, credential, and undergraduate programs:[1]

Graduate Programs

  • Four to five year full-time program for those pursuing careers in educational research in Learning, Cognition, and Development; Educational Policy and Social Content; and Language, Literacy, and Technology.
  • Fifteen month program that includes a year-long apprenticeship at an actual school site, where the skills learned can be applied in real life situations.
  • In conjunction with the UC Irvine Chemistry Department, this two year program provides a single subject teacher credential in Chemistry.
  • Two to three year program that is designed for those pursuing careers as middle school or high school teachers.

Credential Programs

  • Full time, three quarter program that leads to a multiple subject teaching credential for grades K-6.
  • Full time, three quarter program that leads to a single subject teaching credential in art, music, English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, mathematics, sciences and social sciences for grades 7-12.

Undergraduate Programs

  • Four year B.A. degree in the study of education centering on four areas: human development, learning, and cognition; societal and policy contexts affecting education; media and communication systems for learning; and educational research and evaluation.
  • Offered specializations: Early Childhood Learning and Development, After-school Learning and Development, Children's Learning and Development, Digital Media and Learning, English Language Learning, and Research and Evaluation
  • Undergraduates earn a STEM degree (Biology, Chemistry, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or Physics) and a teacher credential in four years.
  • Program highlights the importance of high quality after school activities and builds the requisite skills and initiative for working with children and adolescents.
  • The State requires that all teachers must be able to demonstrate competence in their desired field of teaching. UC Irvine offers this program that fulfills this requirement for the field of mathematics.

Rankings

In 2015 the School of Education was ranked 31st in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report Annual Ranking of Best Graduate Schools.[11] The National Council on Teacher Quality/U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Education's Cal Teach Math & Science Teacher Education Program as #1 in California, # 1 in the Western Region, and # 8 in the nation for quality of teacher preparation.[12] Relative to other Schools of Education, the School ranks in the top 2% in the number of faculty members with grants, the top 1% in number of faculty articles published in peer reviewed journals and the top 1% in number of faculty articles cited.[13]
