The University of Baguio (acronym: UB) is a private, Filipino, multidisciplinary, autonomous, ASEAN 2015 and K-12 Ready university located in the City of Baguio, Philippines. The school was founded by Dr. Fernando Gonzaga Bautista and Rosa Castillo Bautista on August 8, 1948 as the Baguio Technical and Commercial Institute with 80 students. The student population as of year 2000 is about 18,000 students in its tertiary, secondary, and primary levels.
History
The University of Baguio, then known as the Baguio Technical Commercial Institute, was situated in a rented building along Session Road in its first two years of existence. Colloquially, students and citizens of the city loved to call it Baguio Tech. It was headed by its Dr. Fernando "Tatay" G. Bautista and Mrs. Rosa "Nanay" Castillo Bautista on the 8th of August in 1948.
On August 7, 1969, the institute was granted university status. After 21 years of service, then-Secretary of Education Dr. Onofre D. Corpuz signed its university charter attended by officials of the Department of Education, officials of the city of Baguio, 20 heads/representatives of educational institutions in the United States and Great Britain and presidents of more than 60 colleges and universities in the Philippines. Dr. Fernando Bautista became the first president of the University of Baguio.
Institution
From the initial five course offerings of Baguio Tech, the University of Baguio now an autonomous University, offers 21 undergraduate programs, 12 graduate programs and 10 short-term programs where students can choose from, a Preparatory High School, Science High School and a Grade School. It is proud top claim its prominent status as an education pioneer and leader in this country. It has grown to be an institution of close to 18,000 students and more than 400 faculty members. It now counts 12 buildings, which house 11 colleges, two high schools, and one elementary school.
The university acquires various modern facilities and equipment such as a science, technical, and computer laboratories, libraries, multi-purpose and function halls, an audio-visual center, a 5,000-seat gymnasium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a fitness gym, a dental/medical laboratory, x-ray laboratory, a research center, and a community outreach center.

University of Baguio Preparatory High School
The University of Baguio High School, popularly known as UB High School, is the Mother-department of the University of Baguio. It provides a well rounded education and always there to guide and prepare our youth for the next step in life. The high school department was established at the same year the university was born, 1948. Since then, it has become one of Baguio's most prominent and leading high schools.[1]
University of Baguio Science High School
The University of Baguio Science High School, otherwise known as Science High, is the science department of the university. In 1963, sixth grade students from the high school (and some from the city) took a special examination. Passers of the test were put in one class called the Special Science Scholars Section or SSSS. Following the test, an annual scholarship examination was administered for the best and brightest pupils. Thus, in 1967, the University of Baguio Science High School ushered its first graduates. In 1970, the UB Science High Schools received its legal recognition and has since then become the pioneer of Science Education and first-class learning in the country. It has also become one of Asia's best and competitive schools.

The first true high school varsity team, the Greyhounds, is well known in the local sporting circles. The first true mixed youth choir in Baguio, the Sonus Juventus. The first socially relevant programs conducted in a secondary school, the Immersion Camps and Outreach, were started in the Science High.[1]
Athleticism
The University of Baguio is home to an assortment of athletic organizations. The UB Cardinals is the head name of various sports in the school-basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, chess, and athletics. Soccer was once a major sport in the university but was removed recently.
UB is also in partnership with the multi-award winning taekwondo team of Baguio, the Baguio Defenders. UB also has a national award-winning team of Arnisadors or Arnis players and judo players.
The university is a member of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League or BBEAL along with several top universities in the city.
Accidents in the university
Back in February 2008, the University of Baguio Preparatory High School (as it was called) was engulfed in flames until firemen came to put out the fire. The main building was razed to the ground while several floors of the then-FRB (now FGB) and RCB building were hit with fire.
Another fire-related accident happened in the university as the dome of the RCB building caught fire until it was put down.
In August 2013, another fire targeted the university. The building was a physical education building as well as classrooms for the fourth year students. The building was not entirely burned but remnants of the building still remain. It also shows that the building was once the Baguio Tech facility located at Kalantiao Street, one of the university's first and oldest infrastructures. Two people were affected by the fire-Caesar Badicao, a faculty of the high school and well-renowned Arnis coach and Frederick Chaloy, a security marshal. Chaloy was suffocated due to the intense billowing of the smoke. Badicao sustained second-degree burns. Both were rushed to the nearby Saint Louis University Sacred Heart Hospital. Badicao, however, died one month later.

Some notable personalities from the University of Baguio include Ferdinand "Bong" Pascual, basketball referee (member of UB Cardinals),[2] Ramon Naval Guico, Jr., Mayor of Binalonan,[3] Frank Cimatu, Palanca-winning poet,[4] Pia Guttierez, TV Patrol World reporter,[5] and Ivan Jim Layugan, writer, Bagong Rizal Awardee (founder of university publication Pulse),[6] among others.
