University Hospital Coventry is a large National Health Service (NHS) hospital situated in the Walsgrave on Sowe area of Coventry, West Midlands, England, 4 miles (6.4 km) from the city centre. It is part of the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, which also includes the Hospital of St. Cross that is situated in Rugby, Warwickshire. It has a large, progressive accident & emergency department providing a trauma service to Coventry and Warwickshire, and is one of the largest of its kind outside of London.

Development

The hospital was built under a PFI to replace both the Walsgrave Hospital and the Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital. Construction started in July 2002 and the hospital opened on 10 July 2006.[1] The partners in the scheme, known as Projectco, were Innisfree Ltd, Skanska, VINCI, GE and ISS Mediclean. Skanska subsequently sold its stake to Innisfree for £66 million. [2] The hospital cost £440 million to build, but Projectco is guaranteed an income of £3.3 billion over 30 years, including facilities contracts.

The hospital is equipped with 1,250 beds and 27 operating theatres.[1] On 26 March 2012, the hospital was designated as one of four trauma centres in the West Midlands Region.[3] In 2012, the planning committee approved an application to build a new car park at the hospital, to help improve ongoing congestion and traffic issues.[4]

Research and teaching

The University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust works in partnership with Warwick Medical School on particular research themes and areas of clinical research as well as providing training and education for postgraduates.[5][6]

Dr Raj Mattu, a consultant cardiologist was dismissed by the Trust in 2010. In 2001, he had exposed the cases of two patients who had died in crowded bays at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry. In April 2014 an Employment Tribunal found "did not cause or contribute to his dismissal" and had been subject to "many detriments" by the trust as a consequence of being a Whistleblower.[7] He has submitted a claim for damages of more than £6.5 million. Two locum consultants had to be hired cover his position. An independent £500,000 QC-led inquiry recommended in 2007 that Dr Mattu should be allowed to return to work.[8]

Coventry Hospital Radio

The hospital also plays host to Coventry Hospital Radio, a free station provided through the Hospedia bedside units, that has been broadcasting since 1972. The station is run by volunteers and managed by an elected committee. The station is situated on the 5th floor and is available to all wards providing music, entertainment and chat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.[9][10] In 2012, Coventry Hospital Radio was shortlisted for three National HBA Radio Awards. Radio presenter, Neil Wilkes, won a silver award for "Best Newcomer".[11][12]

BMI The Meriden Hospital

The Meriden Hospital is a private hospital run by BMI Healthcare. It is situated within the hospital site opposite to the NHS hospital.[13]
