Universidade Nova de Lisboa (pronounced: [univɨsiˈdad(ɨ) ˈnɔvɐ dɨ liʒˈboɐ]) or NOVA is a Portuguese public university established in 1973, in Lisbon and is the youngest of the three public universities of Lisbon. NOVA is a higher education institution with internationally recognized research and quality teaching that ensures high levels of professional success to its students.

In 2014, the THE-QS World University Rankings has evaluated NOVA as one of the world's best universities being ranked number 312 in the world.[2]

History

Universidade Nova de Lisboa was founded in 1973 as part of a programme of expansion and diversification in higher education in Portugal and was a response to an ever increasing demand for higher education in the city and surrounding areas of Lisbon.

During its first years, the University offered mainly graduate and specialist programs. Since the end of 1977, when the first regular programs started, the NOVA has been expanding steadily.

Organization

NOVA, as well as its academic units, enjoy scientific, academic and administrative autonomy and, as a state institution, is mainly funded by the Portuguese Ministry of Education.

The University has about 19.000 students, 1 527 teachers and 707 non-academic staff, distributed through five faculties, three institutes and one school, providing a wide range of courses in all fields of knowledge.[3]

NOVA integrates 41 scientific research centres funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), including 3 associated laboratories (in partnership with other institutions). In the last assessment by FCT (2007-2008), 25 of these centres were graded as “Excellent” or “Very Good”, accounting for 61%.[4]

The Welfare Students Services are located near the Rectory and supervise financial aid to the students, four faculty canteens and four university residences.

Governing Bodies

University Assembly: the University's highest representative body. Elects the Rector and revises the University statutes. There are 218 elected members

Rector: presides over the University and represents it in its external relations. Chairs the representative boards and is assisted by the Vice-Rectors and Pro-Rectors.

Senate: the most important central decision making body in academic self-government. Includes representatives of academic units, of personnel groups and students. There are 50 members.

Administrative Board: decides on administrative and business policy

Advisory council: Rector's consultative body to foster links among university and community.

The Lisbon MBA

The Lisbon MBA is a partnership between Universidade Catolica Portuguesa and NOVA. The partnership includes a Full Time One year MBA, in partnership with MIT Sloan School of Management and a Part Time MBA. The two Universities that offer this MBA program hold the triple crown accreditation namely AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB.
