The National Autonomous University of Honduras (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras) is the national public university of Honduras. It was founded in 1847 and has many campuses throughout the country.

Autonomy

On October 15th, 1957 the autonomy of UNAH was passed by decree and since then UNAH is receiving 6% of the government's educational budget.

Campuses

University city

The main campus is located in the country's capital of Tegucigalpa and is home to the university's Medical School hospital and campus. We can also find the Observatorio Astronómico Centroamericano de Suyapa de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (OACS/UNAH), (Suyapa Central American Astronomical Observatory), which uses a 42cm Meade telescope. It is also home of the Palacio Universitario de los Deportes y las Ciencias de la Cultura Física UNAH, (Sports and Physical Culture Palace), one of the most modern sports multi-use buildings in Latin America, with a capacity of 12,000 persons.

Other campuses

Apart from the main campus, there are eight Distance Education Centers, four Telecenters and eight Regional Centers. Among this Regional Center we can find the UNAH-VS (UNAH Valle de Sula) located at San Pedro Sula, the Centro Universitario Regional del Litoral Atlantico (CURLA) located at La Ceiba, and the Centro Universitario Regional del Centro (CURC) located at Comayagua Campus. It is currently Honduras' largest university in terms of student enrollment and one of the largest university systems in Central America.

UNAH Library

UNAH Library system was founded in 1970, it has more than 16,000 volumes, internet website, electronic books, all campus in UNAH have their own library.
