Unity City Academy is a city academy in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England which opened in 2003, sponsored by support services company Amey plc. In 2005 OFSTED reported the academy was failing, and required "special measures".[2][3] In March 2013 the school was rated as 'Good'; in all four categories by Ofsted [4][5] The school is sponsored by the Academies Enterprise Trust.
In September 2006 the academy was relaunched as a Vocational and Enterprise Centre, following the building of a new enterprise centre funded by the Department for Education and Skills.
In 2007 literacy levels at Unity City Academy were very low. Initial STAR Reading baseline assessment revealed that an average of 80% of the pupils were at least one year below their chronological reading age. Since the introduction of Accelerated Reader four years ago, the reading age of pupils has increased in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, whilst KS4 attainment levels have also consistently improved. In 2013, the Archbishop of York visited the Academy and talked about the Academies theme "Dare to Dream". He said to the pupils they should dream up what would like in the future and grasp it with both hands. The Academy has four house teams called Adventure, Discovery, Endeavor, Resolution which support different charities. A significant event to raise money for these charities is a 24-hour challenge which will commence on the 28th of June 2013.
After leaving East Point Academy in December 2014, Neil Powell was installed as Principal of Unity City in January 2015, replacing the retiring Pat Towey after East Point Academy was transferred from the Academies Enterprise Trust to the Inspiration Trust.[6] Mr Powell stated during the takeover of East Point that he wished to "remain with the AET" [7]
