United States elections, 1880

The 1880 United States general election occurred during the Third Party System, and elected the members of the 47th United States Congress. Republicans retained the Presidency and took control of the House. An unclear partisan situation prevailed in the Senate.

In the Presidential election, Republican Representative James Garfield of Ohio defeated Democratic General Winfield Hancock.[1]

Republicans picked up several seats in the House, taking a majority of the chamber for the first time since the 1874 elections.[2]

In the Senate, Republicans made small gains at the expense of the Democrats, but neither party had a majority due to the presence of an independent Senator and a Readjuster Senator.[3] The two parties ultimately agreed to share power.[4]
