Uniq (Korean: 유니크; often stylized as UNIQ), is a Chinese-South Korean boy group formed by Chinese company Yuehua Entertainment. The group consists of three Chinese members - Zhou Yixuan, Li Wenhan, and Wang Yibo - and two South Korean members - Kim Sungjoo and Cho Seungyoun. Prior to debut, Uniq trained with YG Entertainment in South Korea for over 4 years. The group debuted on October 16, 2014 with the release of both Chinese and Korean versions of their debut song "Falling In Love" on October 20 2014.[2]
History
Pre-debut
Yixuan was scouted by Yuehua Entertainment after his appearance at KOD, a large street dance competition in China. Wenhan has a background in classical guitar and swimming, and had previously appeared on television in a diving reality show which aired nationwide on JSTV in April 2013.[3] Yibo had taken part in IBD National HipHop Dance Contest in Louyang, China in 2011.[4]
2014: Debut with "Falling in Love" and OST for TMNT & Penguins of Madagascar
The group officially debuted on October 20, 2014 with the title track "Falling In Love", composed by Hyuk Shin, Yoonji Lee, Jordan Kyle, Matthew Heath, Gray Griggs and Hyeong Kyu Kim and written by two Uniq members, Sungjoo and Seungyoun.[5] On October 23, they released a song "Born To Fight" for the OST of the Chinese version of the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.[6] On November 5, the group released a video with English version of "Falling in Love".[7] On November 10, they released "Celebrate" for the OST of the Chinese version of the movie Penguins of Madagascar.[8] UNIQ was under YG Entertainment for their activities in Korea until in 2015, Yuehua Entertainment partnered with Starship Entertainment. They are now under Starship Entertainment for their promotions in Korea.
