AllMusic [10]

Eduardo Rivadavia at AllMusic gave Under Lock and Key 4.5 stars out of five, calling it "quite possibly Dokken's most 'complete' album, with a little something for every type of fan". He noted "Unchain the Night" and "The Hunter" as "two almost peerless examples of Dokken's best songwriting template—bittersweet mid-paced rockers", while particularly praising George Lynch's soloing on both songs. "In My Dreams" and "It's Not Love" were highlighted as memorable singles; "Lightnin' Strikes Again" and "Til the Livin' End" as "fist-pumping headbangers"; and "Slippin' Away" and "Jaded Heart" as "saccharine ballads". Rivadavia recommended the album as the best introduction to new listeners of Dokken, but remarked that heavy metal purists would likely prefer the band's 1984 album Tooth and Nail.[10]
