Ullathai Allitha is 1996 Tamil comedy film directed by Sundar C. The film starred Karthik, Goundamani and Rambha in the lead roles. The film's plot elements were borrowed from Hindi film Andaz Apna Apna. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by Sirpi.^[1][2] The film was a Blockbuster hit at the box office. The film released on January 15, 1996 and received positive reviews from the critics and audience. The film is now considered to be one of the best comedy movies made in Tamil cinema. The film remade in Telugu as Veedevadandi Babu with Mohanbabu, in Kannada as Galate Aliyandru with Shivrajkumar and in Malay version as Cinta U-Turn in 2008. This Blockbuster movie ran for nearly 300days.

Plot

Raja (Karthik) feels stifled under his strict father Col. Chandrasekhar (Jaiganesh) and when his father picks a girl he doesn't like for him to marry, it is the last straw and he runs away to Ooty. There he teams up with Vasu (Goundamani) and they come up with an ill-advised plan to kidnap Indu (Rambha), the daughter of Vishwanathan (Manivannan). Vishwanathan is in fact Col. Chandrasekhar's friend and it is Indu that Raja was supposed to marry. But Vishwanathan now mistakes Vasu to be his friend's son and takes him under his wing while Raja is hired to be his driver.

The movie is a remake of Andaz Apna Apna.

Production

During the making of the film, there was a misunderstanding and subsequent falling out between the lead actress Rambha and the producer of the film.^[3]

Soundtrack

The music was Composed by Sirpy and lyrics written by Pazhani Bharathi.^[4] As pointed out by itwofs.com, all the songs from this film has been plagiarised from various sources.^[5]

Release

The film was a Blockbuster Hit at box-office. Balaji wrote:" It stands out in that every aspect of it, be it the romance or the fights, has been handled with an eye on comedy and there is not a single moment of emotions or sentiments".^[6]

Legacy

The success of the film paved way for numerous comedy films.^[7] The film made Sundar C. as one of the most sought directors. Rambha gained popularity through this film and became one of the leading heroines. The film also made Manivannan as one of the famous comedians.^[8] Karthik and Goundamani became one of the famous comic pairs from the film, the pair went on to do many films.^[9] The success of the film led Sundar C. to collaborate with Karthik in subsequent projects - Mettukudi (1996), Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999) and Azhagana Naatkal (2001). Azhagana Naatkal was compared by critics with Ullathai Allitha due to its similarity in sequences and characterisations.^[10]

Sundar C. himself listed it as one of the favourite films he had directed.^[11] Vimal who acted in director's Kalakalappu recalled that he had watched this film during his schooldays.^[12] Subha J. Rao and K. Jeshi of The Hindu placed the film in league with other successful comedy films like Kadhalikka Neramillai (1964), Thillu Mullu (1981) and Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990).^[13]
