In July 2012, actor Prasanna tweeted that Rajan Madhav had finished penning his next script and that he will be a part of the cast.[5] The film was titled as Ula in August 2012 and said to be a multi-starrer.[6] Instead of the director's brother Sajan, Thaman was signed in to compose the score, while Padmesh and Praveen K. L.-N. B. Srikanth were reportedly roped in as the cinematographer and the editors.[7] Prasanna in September told that Rajan Madhav had been working on the script for eight months and that it was planned to start in December.[8] Saiarun was later signed as the editor, replacing Praveen and Srikanth.

The shooting was started in March 2013.[9] Along with Prasanna, Narain was supposed to play the lead roles, but they both were replaced with Ajmal Ameer and Ashok, while Gayathrie was reported to play the female lead.[9] Ajmal Ameer stated that he played a rockstar in the film and that he was paired with Mumbai based Priya Banerjee. In August 2013, a song, penned by Madhan Karky, was to be shot.[10] Vidharth said that he played the role of a rowdy gang leader.[11] Gayathrie in October 2013 stated that every character in the film comes in shades of grey and that seventy per cent of the film had been completed.[2] West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo had agreed to dance for a song in the film, which was shot in October 2013.[12][13] [14]
