The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), is a government parastatal company, whose primary purpose is to generate electric power, for use in Uganda and for sale to willing, neighboring countries.

The headquarters of UEGCL are located on the 3rd Floor, UEGCL Towers, 37 Nakasero Road, on Nakasero Hill, in Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the headquarters of UEGCL are:0°19'35.0"N, 32°34'38.0"E (Latitude:0.326389; Longitude:32.577222).[1] The company maintains a second office at 18-20 Faraday Road, Amberly Estate, in Jinja, approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi), by road, east of Kampala.[2]
History
The company was established in 2001, by Act of Parliament, following the break-up of the erstwhile Uganda Electricity Board (UEB).[3] Formed in the same time frame were: (a) Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), (b) Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) and (c) the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
Operations
The company is responsible for the operation, maintenance and improvements of the power stations owned by the Uganda government. In 2002, UEGCL, on behalf of the Government executed a 20-year operational, management and maintenance concession to Eskom Uganda Limited, a subsidiary of Eskom, the South African energy company, to cover the two power stations that UEGCL owned at the time; namely Kiira Power Station and Nalubaale Power Station. Eskom sells the electricity it generates to Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) as the authorized single buyer. UETCL turns around and sells the power Umeme, the energy distributor, who then sells it to the public.[4]
Planned IPO
In January 2015, the company Chairman announced plans to list she shares of company stock on the Uganda Securities Exchange, in an Initial Public Offering (IPO), within the following two years. The funds so raised shall be used to develop more electricity generation stations, thus adding to national electricity output. At that time, UEGCL owned 380MW of generating capacity, with a view to increasing to 563MW in 2018 and 1,213MW in 2020.[5]
