UTC−05:00 is a time offset that subtracts 5 hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). In North America, it is observed in the Eastern Time Zone during standard time, and in the Central Time Zone during the other 8 months (see Daylight saving time). The Western Caribbean uses it year round.

Although the legal time for all of Alabama during the standard time period is Central Time (UTC–6), Phenix City and its surrounding communities informally synchronize their clocks with the considerably larger city of Columbus, Georgia, directly across the Chattahoochee River from Phenix City.
