USS Whiting (SS-433), a proposed World War II Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Merlangius merlangus or "whiting", a small European food fish. Her construction by the Cramp Shipbuilding Company in Philadelphia was authorized but the contract for her construction was cancelled on 29 July 1944.
