USS Vicksburg

USS Vicksburg (CG-69) in the Atlantic Ocean

Five ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Vicksburg, named in honor of the city Vicksburg, Mississippi, and/or the Civil War Battle of Vicksburg (1863).

• The first Vicksburg was a steamship, purchased and commissioned by the Navy in 1863, and sold in 1865.

• The second Vicksburg (PG-11) was a gunboat, commissioned in 1897 and renamed Alexander Hamilton in 1922 in the Coast Guard. Around 1935, she was renamed Beta and finally placed out of service in 1944.

• The third Vicksburg (CL-81), was a Cleveland-class light cruiser, that was renamed USS Houston during construction. The ship was commissioned as USS Houston on 20 December 1943 and decommissioned on 15 December 1947.

• The fourth Vicksburg (CL-86), originally named USS Cheyenne, was a Cleveland-class light cruiser, commissioned in 1944 and struck in 1962.

• The fifth Vicksburg (CG-69), originally named USS Port Royal, is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, commissioned in 1992 and on active service as of 2013.
