USS Simpson
Two ships in the United States Navy have been named USS Simpson. The first was named for Rear Admiral Edward Simpson and the second was named for Rear Admiral Rodger W. Simpson.
- The first Simpson (DD-221) was a Clemson-class destroyer, commissioned in 1920 and decommissioned in 1946.
- The second Simpson (FFG-56) is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate, commissioned in 1985 and actively serving as of 2012.(From a sailor on-board) Simpson sails for Destroyer Squadron 14 and is homeported in Mayport, Florida. Simpson is 1 of 2 commissioned US Naval vessels that have engaged, and sunk another naval vessel in combat. The day was 18 April 1988, also known as Missile Monday, which was a retaliatory strike from an Iranian mine blowing a hole in the side of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58).(see Operation Praying Mantis) The only other commissioned US Naval ship to sink another naval vessel in combat is the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides".
