Tyrrells is an English-based manufacturer of potato crisps, founded in 2002. Founded by farmer Will Chase, the potatoes were originally all grown on his farm near Leominster, Herefordshire. The potatoes, with the skin always left on, are cooked in small batches and packed nearby to the farm where they were produced. Tyrrells claims the rich red soil on the farm makes for a better crisp.
History
Tyrrells was founded in 2002 by Will Chase. Within several years of its creation Tyrrells expanded its market into Europe and later into the U.S. It is claimed that Tyrrells is a "seed to crisp" operation, starting with the cultivation of potatoes and ending with the final packaged product of 100% natural potato crisps. Tyrrells has received numerous awards for the taste and quality of its crisps, both in England, as well as internationally. [1] In the year 2008 Tyrrells had sales of over 13 million pounds of potato crisps.[2]
In April 2008, Chase, sold a majority stake for £30M to Langholm Capital. Chase had a long running dispute with Tesco re stocking his potatoes, and so refused to sell them any supplies of Tyrrells. After Langholm took over, they dropped the existing distribution chain, and focused on large supermarkets including Tesco; they then dropped Chase as a supplier of potatoes. As a result, after divorcing his wife, Chase used the money to start production of Chase potato vodka to again use up his stock of farmed potatoes.
In 2010 Perry Haydn Taylor's agency, big fish, began work on branding and marketing Tyrells, focusing on the "quintessentially English" identity of the product. [3]
In July 2013, the firm was sold for £100M to Dubai-based luxury brands investor Investcorp.[4]
