Tyrone Roberts (born 1 June 1991) is an Indigenous Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Newcastle Knights of the National Rugby League. He primarily plays halfback and five-eighth, but can fill in at hooker and fullback.

Background

Born in the Grafton, New South Wales, Roberts played his junior football for the Western Suburbs Rosellas while attending Hunter Sports High. After being spotted playing in the Newcastle Rugby League by Knights coach Rick Stone, he was signed by the Newcastle Knights.[1] As a youngster, Roberts played for the New South Wales Under 15s team, Australian Indigenous Under 16s team and New South Wales Indigenous team.

Playing career

From 2009 to 2011, Roberts played for the Newcastle Knights' NYC team.[2]

In Round 6 of the 2011 NRL season, Roberts made his NRL debut for the Knights against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

At the end of 2011, Roberts played for the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis.

In May 2012, Roberts re-signed with the Knights on a 2-year contract.[3]

On 19 February 2014, Roberts again re-signed with the Knights on a 2-year contract.[4]

On 4 May 2015, Roberts played for Country against City in the annual City vs Country Origin match.[5]

On 13 February 2015, Roberts played for the Indigenous All Stars against the NRL All Stars in the annual All Stars match.[6]

Personal life

Roberts is cousins with former St. George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers, Sydney Roosters and Wigan Warriors player Amos Roberts and current Gold Coast Titans player James Roberts.[7]
