Tye Kayle Sheridan (born November 11, 1996)[2][3] is an American actor, known for his roles in The Tree of Life, Mud, and Joe. He will play the role of the young Cyclops in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse.

Early life

Sheridan was born in Elkhart, Texas. His mother, Stephanie, owns a beauty salon, and his father, Bryan Sheridan, is an employee of UPS.[4] He has a younger sister, Madison. He attended the Elkhart Independent School System since kindergarten, where he excelled in academics and sports.

Career

Sheridan began his film career playing Steve in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, with Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn, after an almost year-long casting search of more than 10,000 children from Texas and Oklahoma. Sheridan was one of 12 finalists invited to Austin for final auditions for the role of the eldest son Jack, depicted in adulthood by Sean Penn. Though he lost the part to Hunter McCracken, Sheridan was selected for the part of the youngest brother Steve. While filming the movie, he relocated with his mother and sister to Smithville for four months.[2]

In Mud (2012), Sheridan plays the 14-year-old Ellis, alongside Jacob Lofland, who plays his best friend Neckbone. In the film, two teenage boys encounter a fugitive, Mud (Matthew McConaughey), and form a pact to help him escape from an island in the Mississippi and reunite with the woman he loves (Reese Witherspoon). The film is directed by Jeff Nichols, and played in competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Sheridan also plays Gary Jones in the film Joe, which stars Nicolas Cage playing an ex-con who meets a 15-year-old boy, the eldest child in a homeless family headed by an alcoholic father, and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.[5] For his role he has received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best upcoming young actor at 70th Venice International Film Festival.

In June 2013, he joined the cast of the new film written and directed by Kyle Wilamowski, Grass Stains, along with Kaitlyn Dever. He will play a teen discovering his first love (Dever). When a prank goes awry and causes the death of his girlfriend’s older brother, the boy must balance his secret guilt with his feelings for the girl.[6][7]

In August 2013, he joined the cast of the new film of the Exclusive Media Group and Denver and Delilah Productions, Dark Places, along with Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz and Nicholas Hoult. The film is about Libby Day (Theron) a woman who is forced to re-face the twenty-year-old massacre of her family when a group known as the “Kill Club” begins to investigate what really happened the day Libby’s family was murdered. Sheridan will play Ben, the 16-year-old brother who is accused of molesting a group of girls and murdering his family before he’s sentenced to life in prison.[8][9] Also he will play Will Cutter in the film The Forger, from a script by Richard D’Ovidio, which stars John Travolta. follows former child art prodigy and petty thief Ray Cutter (Travolta), who arranges to buy his way out of prison so he can spend time with his ailing son (Sheridan), only to be forced to change his plans and commit one last big job for the syndicate that financed his early release.[10]

In February 2014, he joined the cast of the new Mockingbird Pictures and Division Films, Last Days in the Desert, directed by Rodrigo Garcia, along with Ewan McGregor, Ciarán Hinds and Ayelet Zurer. McGregor plays both a holy man and a demon on a journey through the desert. An encounter with a family struggling to survive in this harsh environment forces the holy man to confront his own fate. The film is set to commence principal photography in early February in the Southern California desert.[11][12]

In March 2014, he joined the cast of the new Paramount's horror comedy, Scouts vs. Zombies, directed by Christopher B. Landon. The story is about three high school Boy Scouts who must use their skills to battle vicious zombies after their small town faces a zombie outbreak. Sheridan will play the budding honors student who is handsome and athletic but doesn't know it yet, still lacking the confidence needed to talk to girls he likes.[13]

In May 2014, he join the cast of the new Cinelou Films' The Yellow Birds, based on a novel by Kevin Powers, directed by Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton, along with Benedict Cumberbatch and Will Poulter. The story centers around two soldiers, a 21-year-old played by Cumberbatch and a teenager played by Sheridan, who meet in boot camp on the eve of their deployment in Iraq. The older soldier, bound by a promise to the teen’s mother, takes the younger soldier under his wing during their deployment.[14]

Recently, he joined the cast of the new Nomadic Independence's Entertainment, along with Michael Cera and Dean Stockwell.[15] He also starred in novel adaption The Dark Places, which based on the book by "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn.[16]

On January 22, 2015, director Bryan Singer tweeted that Sheridan had been cast as Scott Summers/Cyclops in the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse.
