Twine (software)

Twine is a tool created by Chris Klimas for making interactive fiction in the form of web pages.

Software

Twine is available as a free software download for Mac OS X and Windows for version 1.4.2, an HTML download for Twine 2.0, and there is also a command-line interface called twee.[1]

The Twine software provides a visual representation of the hypertext structure, using a "node map".

Chris Klimas and the Twine development team are working on a second version of Twine. Twine 2 is a browser-based application written in HTML5 and Javascript. It is currently version 2.0.3.[2]

Cultural impact

Twine emphasises the visual structure of hypertext and does not require knowledge of any programming languages like other popular game development tools do.[3]

Howling Dogs, a Twine-based game by Porpentine, won "Best Story" and "Best Writing" at the 2012 XYZZY awards for interactive fiction.[4]

Twine 2.0

Chris Klimas uploaded a video titled 'Introducing Twine 2.0' to YouTube in late 2014. He stated that the application is now browser-based, and has been redesigned from the ground up, with entirely new story formats and coding. As of now, the current version is 2.0.3, and Twine 2.0 is still in active development.
