Tufanganj is a sub-division town and a municipality in Cooch Behar district in the Indian state of West Bengal.
Geography
Tufanganj is located at 26°19′N 89°40′E / 26.32°N 89.67°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 70 metres (229 feet). The river Raidak flows beside the town.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Tufanganj had a population of 19,293. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tufanganj has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 77%. In Tufanganj, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Transport
People here are dependent mainly on the bus service. Public and North Bengal State Transport Corporation bus services are available. Rikshaw is also available for transportation within town. Tufanganj Railway station is situated on the southern part of the town. Different city connection railway services are available from this station.
Education
Even being a very small town it has a good educational system. Secondary and Higher secondary schools are mainly run by either state or central Government. Bengali and English are main medium of education. Some reputed schools are N.N.M. High School, Ila Devi girls' High School, Netaji High School, Harirdham High School, Tufanganj Vibekananda Vidyalaya. One Bachelor college Tufanganj Mahavidyalaya is situated here.
Sports
Several outdoor game competition are organised by the Tufanganj Municipality. This town is known for producing sportspeople, such as cricketer Shib Paul. The town has one outdoor stadium which is maintained by Sub-divisional Sports Association. One national level swimming pool where veteran coaches train children year round is situated here.
Culture
This place is rich in Bengali culture. It is one of the centre for the Bhawaiya song and dance. Famous Bhawaiya singer Abbas Uddin was born here.
