Coordinates: 8°5′54″S 79°2′1.8″W / 8.09833°S 79.033833°W The Trujillo Peru Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) under construction. The temple was announced on December 13, 2008 and is being constructed in Trujillo, Peru.[2] At the time of its announcement, the temple was to be the second in Peru and the 17th in South America. It is anticipated to serve approximately 88,000 members.[3]

Peru's only operating temple, which currently serves 114 stakes and districts, was dedicated in Lima by Gordon B. Hinckley in January 1986. Members from Trujillo currently travel 9 to 10 hours to the Lima Peru Temple, which can be exceptionally busy on Saturdays, since members arrive from all over the country. Patrons must sometimes wait for hours to participate in ordinance work.

When announced, the First Presidency stated, "We are confident that this will be a blessing to the many faithful Saints in this and surrounding areas who have had to travel long distances to enjoy the blessings of the temple. We commend the Saints for their devotion and faithfulness, and are thankful for the blessings that will come to them through the construction of this new temple."

Temple site and construction status

The temple site is adjacent to the Campo Eterno cemetery on the Mansiche highway that leads to Huanchaco.[4] Ground was formally broken on September 14, 2011, and an official rendering of the completed building was released.[5] The groundbreaking was presided over by Rafael E. Pino of the Seventy.[6]

A public open house is scheduled from Friday, 8 May 2015, through Saturday, 30 May 2015, excluding Sundays. The temple will be formally dedicated on Sunday, June 21, 2015.[7]
