Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is an upcoming 2015 action role-playing platform and puzzle video game developed by Frozenbyte.[1] It was announced on March 2, 2015. It is the sequel to Trine 2 and features a return of the series 3 protagonists and medieval fantasy location. The game is the first in the series to feature fully 3D gameplay.

Gameplay

Similar to its predecessors, Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is an action role-playing platform game with puzzle element, which requires the players to utilize the skills of 3 different returning characters: Pontius, Amadeus and Zoya.[2] Abilities varied among characters. Ponitus is a knight equipped with a sword and a shield to defend himself against enemies. Zoya is a thief that is equipped with arrows and can swing across places, while Amadeus is a wizard that has the ability to manipulate and levitate objects.[3][4] Players can swap between the 3 playable characters freely during the campaign.[5] Trine 3 will be the first game in the series to feature 3D gameplay, while the 2D gameplay will still be remained as the game's focus.[6] Features such as three-player co-operative multiplayer, special challenge levels and level editor will be included the final game.[7][8]

Development

The game was revealed by Frozenbyte on March 2, 2015. Alongside with the announcement, a debut trailer was released.[9] A nine-minute gameplay trailer of the game was released on April 9, 2015, showcasing the ways the 3 playable characters interact with the three-dimensional world.[10] The game entered early access on April 21, 2015, so as to allow the company to receive players feedback regarding the new gameplay elements featured. The early access of the game only featured two maps, with the full release being "significantly longer".[11] The game is expected to remain in the early access phrase "for a few months" and the full release of the game is expected to be released in the second or third quarter of 2015 "initially" for Microsoft Windows.[8][12] Ari Pulkkinen, the composer of the original Trine and Trine 2, will return to composer the music for Trine 3.[13]

The developer of the game called the introduction of 3D graphics something "challenging and time consuming", as the skills and the abilities of the three playable characters have to undergo overhaul and redesign without damaging the characters' characteristics.[14]

Reception

In an early access review of the game, Marsh Davies from Rock, Paper, Shotgun gave a mixed review of the game. While praising the game's scenery, environmental design, and the new 3D gameplay for bringing "a better sense of being in the world", he criticized the poor writing, as well as the "inconsistent physics interactions". He also noted that problems, such as confusing precision, occurs as a result of the introduction of the 3D gameplay.[3]
