Trevemper

The old bridge at Trevemper

Trevemper is a hamlet to the south of Newquay, Cornwall, UK, on the west bank of the River Gannel at the rivers lowest bridging point.[1]

The River Gannel is crossed by Trevemper Bridge, built to replace the old packhorse bridge which is first mentioned in 1613. and may date back to the 16th century.[2] English Heritage have registered the bridge as an Ancient Monument. Coal was shipped from Wales to the River Gannel and unloaded at Trevemper and Penpol Creek during the 18th century, and transported to the smelting works at Truro. Two arches were washed away by storm-water in 1839 and the bridge was consequently repaired with only one arch. A larger bridge was built parallel to the old bridge in 1925, to carry the A3075 Trevemper to Chiverton Cross, Blackwater. The old bridge was closed to traffic in 1939.[3]

Nearby is another ancient monument, Trevemper Mill.[4]
