Trade and Tryon

The intersection of Trade and Tryon streets is the crossroads of Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina; it marks the city center and divides the city's first four wards.[1] The two streets intersect at Independence Square,[2] known locally as simply "The Square", this originated as the crossroads for a pair of native American trails. From this location, the city was founded and expanded. Tryon Street runs northeast-southwest, while Trade Street runs southeast-northwest.
Notable structures and events
The Bank of America Corporate Center (right)
- In 1768, erected the first home in what is present day Charlotte.
- Location of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in May 1775.
- General Nathanael Greene assumed command of the patriot army from Horatio Gates on December 3, 1780.
- Confederate president Jefferson Davis and his cabinet visited on their travels southward after the fall of Richmond in April 1865.
- The Bank of America Corporate Center, a 60-story building housing the executives of the bank and service sector tenants, is located here.
