Town of Salem is an online roleplaying game, inspired by party games Mafia and Werewolf, as well as a StarCraft 2 mod Mafia.[1] Town of Salem challenges players on their ability to convincingly lie as well as detect when other players are lying.[2] The game can be played through browser (free-to-play) or the downloadable Steam version.[3] Town of Salem is built in Flash Action Script and the servers are written in C++.[4]

Gameplay

The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Neutral. A Town player's goal is to eliminate all Mafia and Neutral roles whose goal is to make the Town lose, while a Mafia player's goal is to eliminate all Town and Neutral roles that can't win with the Mafia. Players with Neutral and Town roles do not know the roles of other players', whilst Mafia players only know the roles of other Mafia members.[5] The game is divided into phases during which players may use their roles' abilities, depending on each individual role. [6][7]

Phases

The game consists 4 phases, each last a specific amount of seconds. Each phase is unique, depending on players' roles.

Night

The night phase lasts 30-45 seconds and is when most roles can use their abilities. Serial Killers stealthily murder people, Doctors heal people who are attacked, Sheriffs interrogate people for suspicious activity and many more unique role abilities. Every second night there is a Full Moon, which enables the Werewolf class to use their night ability. Players cannot normally communicate during the night phase with the exception of the Mafia members(who have a private chat screen), a Medium who may speak with the dead, and the Jailor who may converse with the player jailed for that night.

Day

The day phase allows the Town members to discuss who they suspect of being an evil role. Once the voting phase starts a majority vote from the town will put someone on trial. The Jailor and the Mayor can use their abilities during the day.

Vote

During this phase players may vote another player to be lynched. The amount of votes needed for a player to be lynched and initiate the Defense phase depends on the amount of players alive.

Defense

The defense phase is part of the session where the defendant that has been voted can talk while all other players are muted.

Judgement

During this phase the town will vote on the fate of the defendant. Players can vote guilty, innocent or not vote (abstain). If there are more guilty votes than innocent votes the defendant is sentenced to death. If the defendant is voted innocent, the game goes back to the Vote phase and one more player may be lynched.

Spectate

This phase is initiated for a player after the player's death. The player may spectate the game until it ends, if the player's role is Medium, the player may seance one player and talk to him during the Night phase. If there is a Medium alive, the players in the Spectate phase may talk to him during the night. Retributionist may revive dead players whom have not yet left the game.

Roles

Town of Salem has 30 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play. Before a game starts players are put into a lobby and, in the event of a custom game, the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their roles abilities and alignments.[8]
