Tonido is remote access and home server[1][2] software for network-attached storage. Once installed on a computer, Tonido software makes that computer's files available remotely via the internet through the web browser or through native mobile apps. This is useful to get access to user's files, music and videos from anywhere as well as providing the capability to share files and folders with family and colleagues. No port forwarding is required, as data is transmitted through Tonido's servers. Users can switch to not using Tonido's servers by using port forwarding on their router.
Tonido takes the approach of storing all user information including login credentials locally, providing login into Tonido software in the absence of internet connectivity. Since this software provides access to user's own storage without using public cloud services, it is considered as 'personal cloud'.
In addition to remote access, Tonido provides file synchronization capability, allowing users to sync files among multiple machines with their Tonido server. This synchronization unlike other synchronization products does not store or use the public cloud, keeping the user files private. A limit (viz. 2Gb for free users; 2Gb for TonidoPlug users; and 100Gb for Pro users) to how much data a user can synchronize does exist, however, as synched data is relayed through Tonido's servers.[3]

Tonido can be accessed from:

- WebDAV clients: NetDrive, OneDisk, BitKinex
- Mobile: iPhone,[4] Android,[5] Windows Phone[6] and BlackBerry (Beta)[7]
- Sync clients: Tonido Sync clients on Windows, Mac OS X and Ubuntu
Supported platforms
Tonido runs on x86, ARM, PowerPC and MIPS architectures and is available as binary packages for popular Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSUSE as well as Mac OS X and Windows.[8]

TonidoPlug
Tonido software runs on TonidoPlug home server (version 1 and version 2).[9][10][11][12] This is hardware based on the SheevaPlug. TonidoPlug runs Ubuntu Linux under the hood.

New applications can be added for the Tonido platform using PHP.
