Tom Adams (illustrator)

Tom Adams (born 1926) is an American illustrator.

He is most famous for his Agatha Christie paperback cover designs in the 1970s.[1] He also designed several covers for Raymond Chandler.[2] Adams also provided the illustrations for the hardback editions of John Fowles' The Collector, The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman.[3] He also created the covers for Patrick White's The Vivisector,[4] David Storey's Saville. Ghost Story by Peter Straub[5] and Kingsley Amis' Colonel Sun.[6]

Adams designed the album cover of Lou Reed's first solo album, called Lou Reed.

Influence

Adams' design for the Fontana Books edition of the Hercule Poirot mystery Death in the Clouds, featuring a giant wasp, inspired the monster in the Doctor Who adventure The Unicorn and the Wasp, broadcast in 2008. A copy of the book, featuring Adams' cover, appeared in the episode.
