To Write Love on Her Arms (also known as Day One; formerly Renee) is a 2012 American biographical drama film written and directed by Nathan Frankowski, starring Kat Dennings, Chad Michael Murray, Rupert Friend, Juliana Harkavy, Corbin Bleu, and Mark Saul. Based on the life of Renee Yohe and the founding of To Write Love on Her Arms, the film premiered on March 11, 2012 at the Omaha Film Festival.[1]

Plot

19-year-old Renee Yohe has always loved fairy tales: the idea of a princess, a hero and a happily ever after. But her life is that of a darker tale. As she battles with drug addiction, manic depression, self-harm and other life issues, it ultimately leads to the founding of the charity group To Write Love on Her Arms and her journey to recovery.[2]

Production

Pre-production

Josh Lujan Loveless, Bob Massey, Jamie Tworkowski, and Renee Yohe all served as story consultants for the film, collaborating with Frankowski for the script. Producer David Blair McKenna was the person who offered his home to Renee some years ago so she could become sober for those five days before entering rehab, which cemented their lifelong friendship and his involvement in the film.[3]

Filming

Principal photography started on February 23, 2011, which was exactly five years after Jamie and Renee first met.[4] Filming went until March 29, 2011, and was shot entirely in Orlando, Florida, where Renee is from. Many scenes were shot at Valencia Community College, The DAVE School, Full Sail University and Wall Street Plaza.[3]

Soundtrack

The film features songs from Travis McCoy, Paper Route, Rachael Yamagata, Dead Man's Bones, Corbin Bleu, Between the Trees, Kye Kye, Flint Eastwood, Flagship, Gatlin Elms, Duologue, Danny Leggett, Civilian, Savannah, Alex Bennett, and Bearcat.[5]

Release

The film opened the 21st Florida Film Festival on April 13, 2012, playing at the Regal Winter Park Village.[6] The film is slated for wide release in March 2015.[1]

Piracy

On November 27, 2014, the film was leaked onto several peer-to-peer file sharing websites four months ahead of its intended public release. Along with the film, Fury and three other previously unreleased Sony films were leaked, including Annie, Still Alice, and Mr. Turner.[7]

Awards

The film won the Encore Award from the 2012 Omaha Film Festival. Producers David Blair McKenna and Kim Dawson, director Nathan Frankowski and the Two Streets Entertainment production company accepted the award.

The film was also nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project at the 2012 Visual Effects Society Awards but lost out to the film a.maize.
