Tipperary–Wexford hurling rivalry

The Tipperary–Wexford hurling rivalry has been since the start. With both teams in different provinces and with Wexford not being the most successful team, they have had only a few meetings. During the 60's this rivalry was the most intense in hurling, as both teams faced each other many times, with the winner coming out as All-Ireland champions.

Roots

History

Tipperary being the third member of hurlings 'Holy Trinity', they have had much success and therefore many chances to meet Wexford in the All-Ireland series. Wexford on the other hand have been in the Shadow of Hurlings other trinity member, Kilkenny. With these being contributing factors in these two meeting, meetings were nearly guaranteed when Tipp and Wexford's greatest ever teams coincided with each other. These matches were ferocious, with many players and supporters alike saying the finals between these two were legendary. Both teams showcasing players like Jimmy Doyle, John Doyle, The Rackard brothers and Nick O'Donnell, the best hurling talent in Ireland was on display during the 60's.

The rivalry has been sparse, except for the period from 1960–1968, where the teams met 4 times in All-Ireland finals, with both teams drawing on 2 a piece. Meetings between these two have had significant impacts on history. Tipp's first win against team in 1899 was their first ever two in a row, while Tipp's victory over them in 1951 sealed their second and last ever three in a row. Tipp's win against them in 1997 Semi final ensured they were the first team to get to the All-Ireland final through the back door system. On the other hand, Wexford's win in 1960 gave them their third ever title and Wexford's win 1968 was the final curtain on the great Tipp team of the 60's.
