Tina Wendy Stowell, Baroness Stowell of Beeston, MBE PC (born Nottingham, 2 July 1967),[1] is a Conservative politician and member of the House of Lords.
On 15 July 2014, Lady Stowell was appointed Leader of the House of Lords and Lord Privy Seal in HM Government.
Career
After leaving school Stowell worked between 1986 and 1988 in the UK Ministry of Defence. She was then employed at the British Embassy in the United States till 1991 before transferring to the Prime Minister's Press Office where she served under John Major. It was as a result of her performance in this position that in the 1996 Birthday Honours she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).[2]
Stowell subsequently worked as Head of Corporate Affairs at the BBC, and before that as Head of Communications for three Chairmen of the BBC: Gavyn Davies, Michael Grade, and Michael Lyons.
She later worked at Conservative Party Headquarters during William Hague's tenure as party leader and was his Deputy Chief of Staff.[3][4]
On 10 January 2011, Stowell was created a Life Peer as Baroness Stowell of Beeston, of Beeston in the County of Nottinghamshire,[5] and she was introduced in the House of Lords on 13 January 2011,[6] where she joined the Conservative benches.
On 18 September 2011, Lady Stowell was appointed a Baroness-in-Waiting to HM The Queen, following the promotion of the former Lord-in-Waiting Lord Taylor of Holbeach to be a junior Minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.[7]
In 2013, Lady Stowell was responsible for successfully steering the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill for England and Wales through the House of Lords. She was subsequently promoted to the post of junior Minister (Parliamentary Under-Secretary) at the Department for Communities and Local Government[8] and has defended overseas property investors in London.[9]
In July 2014, she was promoted to Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords, seemingly the first ever Lord Privy Seal not to be a member of HM Government's Cabinet, though she is allowed to attend its meetings.
