Timpview High School, abbreviated "THS", is a public secondary school located in Provo, Utah. Timpview is a 4A school and is part of the Provo City School District. The current principal is Dr. Todd Mckee. Clay Bingham, Ford White, and Chris Chilcoat are the vice-principals. Timpview High School is one of the four high schools in Provo City School District.[1]

History

Timpview High School has had six principals: John L. Matthews (1977–1979), Dolan B. Condie (1979–1985), Kay W. Laursen (1985–1990), Randall S. Merrill (1990–2001), George Bayles (2001–2011), and Todd McKee (2011–Present).

Timpview High School is located in the Edgemont neighborhood of Provo, about two miles north of the Provo campus of Brigham Young University. Timpview is a Region 8, 4A School. It is one of the three high schools in the Provo School District. Timpview High School serves approximately 1,930 students in grades 9 through 12. Timpview’s ethnic make-up is 70% Caucasian, 19% Latino, 5% Asian, and 6% from other minority groups. The average ACT score at Timpview is 23.8.

Timpview High School offers many opportunities for students to get ahead in academics. AP classes include: AP Studio Art, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language, AP French Language, AP German Language, AP English Literature, AP English Language and Composition, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, AP US History, AP US Government and Politics, AP World History, AP European History, AP Music, AP Psychology.,[3] and AP Human Geography.

Timpview offers 21 concurrent enrollment courses through Utah Valley University: Leadership Principles, Multimedia Development, CP: College Writing, Foods 3 (Catering), Intro to Music, Sports Medicine, German 2, German 3, German, College Alg/Trig, AP Biology, Physiology Honors, Medical Principles, Auto 2, Voc. Auto, Woods 2, Advanced Furniture, Beginning Drafting, Auto CAD, Auto CAD Inventor, and Voc. Architecture 1.[4]

ACT testing

Timpview was selected to participate in a national ACT study because it is considered one of 63 higher performing high schools in the U.S. where students are progressing more rapidly toward college and career readiness.[5] Timpview High School students' ACT scores exceed national and state averages.[3]

Other notable achievements

In 2009, Timpview received U.S. News and World Report's Silver Medal award for America's Best High Schools.[6] In 2008, eleven students made it to the National Merit Semifinals. In 2012, Timpview won first in the Skills USA Competition in Mathematics. In 2014, Timpview was named as one of "America's Most Challenging High Schools" according to The Washington Post.

Athletics

Timpview's athletic program offers participation in ten competitive sports: baseball, basketball, football, golf, swimming, soccer, tennis, track, cross country, and volleyball. In the 2008-09 school year, Timpview won the “All Sports Award” for the 4A classification in Utah.[7] As of 2009, the Timpview boys tennis team has won seven consecutive 4A state tennis championships;[8] its girls swimming team has won three consecutive 4A championships.[9] In 2008-09, Timpview also won state championships in football, boys track, and boys cross country.[7] Timpview won a record-breaking four state championships in one season fall, 2013. They were Golf, Girls Tennis, Volleyball, and Football.

Timpview's football team has won eleven state championships since 1986 including four straight from 2006-2010 and consecutive wins in 2012, 2013, and 2014.[10] In 2008, Timpview Football was ranked 21st in the nation, based on their three-peat in the 2008 State Championship.[11] In 2012, 2013 and 2014, Timpview's football team again won the 4A State Championship.[12] Timpview High School's football team is the only undefeated football team in Utah and their coach, Cary Whittingham, is the first football coach in Utah to win three consecutive state championship titles.

Demographics

The students are predominantly white, with a small but growing number of Hispanics and other minorities.[13]
