Timeline of the 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season

The 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season officially ran throughout the year during 2008, with the first depression forming on April 27. The timeline includes information that was not operationally released, meaning that information from post-storm reviews by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), such as information on a storm that was not operationally warned on. This timeline documents all the storm formations, strengthening, weakening, landfalls, extratropical transitions, as well as dissipation's during the 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

During the year, 10 tropical depressions, 4 Cyclonic storms and 1 Severe Cyclonic storm formed. The scope of this basin is north of the Equator and west of the Malaysian Peninsula. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) monitor tropical cyclones in this basin. This basin is divided into two different seas by the IMD; the Arabian Sea to the west of India, which is abbreviated as ARB by the IMD, and the Bay of Bengal to the east of India, which is abbreviated as BOB by the IMD.

  • 0300 UTC – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) designates Tropical Depression 01B as Depression BOB01-2008.[2]
  • 1200 UTC – The IMD upgrades Depression BOB01-2008 (01B) to a deep depression.[2]
  • 1200 UTC – The JTWC upgrades Tropical Depression 01B (BOB 01-2009) to a tropical storm.[1]
April 28
  • 0000 UTC – The IMD upgrades Deep Depression BOB01-2008 (01B) to a cyclonic storm and names it Nargis.[2]
  • 0600 UTC – The JTWC upgrades Tropical Storm 01B to a category 1 tropical cyclone.[1]
  • 0900 UTC – The IMD upgrades Cyclonic Storm Nargis (01B) to a severe cyclonic storm.[2]
April 29
  • 0300 UTC – The IMD upgrades Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis (01B) to a very severe cyclonic storm.[2]
April 30
  • 0600 UTC – The JTWC downgrades Tropical Cyclone 01B (Nargis) to a tropical storm.[1]
  • 1200 UTC – The JTWC re-upgrades Tropical Storm 01B (Nargis) to a category 1 tropical cyclone.[1]

  • 1200 UTC – The JTWC upgrades Tropical Cyclone 01B (Nargis) from a category 1 to a category 3 tropical cyclone.[1]

  • 0600 UTC – The JTWC upgrades Tropical Cyclone 01B (Nargis) to a category 4 tropical cyclone and report that it has reached its peak intensity of 135 mph (215 km/h).[1]
  • 0600 UTC – The IMD reports that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis (01B) has reached its peak intensity of 105 mph (170 km/h).[2]
  • 1200-1400 UTC The IMD reports that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis (01B) makes landfall on the southwest coast of Myanmar with winds of 105 mph (170 km/h).[2]
  • 1800 UTC – The JTWC downgrades Tropical Cyclone 01B (Nargis) to a category 2 tropical cyclone.[1]
  • 2100 UTC – The IMD reports that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis (01B) has weakened into a severe cyclonic storm.[2]

  • 0000 UTC – The JTWC downgrades Tropical Cyclone 01B (Nargis) to a category 1 tropical cyclone.[1]
