Timothy Ian Atherton is an Australian born minor league baseball player.
Originally signed at 17 as a minor league free agent by Minnesota Twins as an outfielder, Tim was released after 5 games for the Twins Gulf Coast League team. The San Diego Padres swooped on him and he was assigned to their Arizona League team. He ended the 2008 season with a .250 batting average but was released by his second organisation within his first year of professional baseball.
Atherton converted from the outfield to pitcher’s mound and was a member of the Canberra Cavalry pitching staff in the inaugural Australian Baseball League season of 2010/11. He managed to gain a 2-3 win-loss record with 3 saves in 27 innings pitched.[1]
On 2 May 2011 Atherton was signed as a minor league free agent by the twins for the second time, this time as a pitcher.[2]
In 2013 Atherton was picked up by Oakland Athletics in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft. In 2014 he spent majority of the year with the Stockton Ports making 1 appearance for the Sacramento River Cats.[2]
