Tides of Man is an American multi-subgenre rock band formed in Tampa, Florida in 2008. They signed to Rise Records March 4, 2009 and have released three full length albums thus far, Empire Theory in 2009 (recorded prior to signing with Rise), Dreamhouse in 2010 and Young and Courageous in 2014.

History

Formation and Empire Theory (2007–2009)

In December 2007, Tilian Pearson, Gill, Sene, Jaye and Gould convened on a whim when Jaye booked a show in Tampa's Ybor City, before the band even had any material together. They wrote new songs and played adapted versions of music from a previous band that Gould, Gill and Jaye had played in. Three of the songs from Empire Theory were written during this 10 days.[1] Tides of Man raised the money and recorded Empire Theory and signed to Rise Records a few months later. They had played less than 15 shows, all south of Jacksonville, Florida, prior to the first national tour booked through Jeremy Holgerson of The Agency Group in July 2009.[2]

The Departure of Tilian and Details of Young and Courageous (2010–present)

On December 20, 2010 the band announced through Myspace that Tilian had left the band to focus on a new musical project (reportedly to become the lead singer of Saosin). The band also stated that they were going to audition new singers and continue on as a band. The departure of Tilian forced them to drop off the No Rain, No Rainbow tour with Greeley Estates and the Downtown Battle Mountain II tour with Dance Gavin Dance that took place early 2011. Since Tilian's departure, they have been writing instrumental tracks while looking for a new vocalist. An instrumental LP is tentatively planned to be released sometime in 2013. It was also announced that Spencer Bradham has joined as keyboardist.[3]

Tilian recorded vocals for a couple of Saosin demos, and it is rumoured that he is going to sing on their next album, but there has been no update from either Tilian or the band since the demos were released. He also briefly worked on a new side project called Archives, but dropped the idea soon after according to a July 3 Twitter status.[4] He is also currently working on a solo album that will be released through Vital Records.[5]

Drummer Matt Mingus confirmed on his Facebook that Tilian Pearson will be Jonny Craig´s replacement in Dance Gavin Dance. The band will embark with their new lineup on the "Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour" in November.

Tides of Man's latest record Young And Courageous was released on February 4, 2014. It is the band's first instrumental album.

With the release of their 2014 album 'Young And Courageous' a project that was partly fan funded, began their transition into a new genre. It is rumored that Tides of Man will no longer seek a vocalist and instead will focus on being an instrumental Post Rock band.

According to Tides of Man facebook the band is currently working on another instrumental release set to release possibly late 2015. It is reported that the band is getting inspiration for some of there new stuff from popular post rock group This Will Destroy You.

Style and songwriting

Songwriting is an integrative process involving every member, with the exception of vocal tracking for Empire Theory, on which Pearson recorded separately from the band, due to being in a different city. Empire Theory is a concept album about war and mercy with the songs being mapped out. On Dreamhouse many of the songs were written by either Gill or Pearson sitting in a room alone, coming up with a song structure and essential riffs. Then the drums and bass were worked individually and the songs were interactively built piece by piece. The recurring theme lyrically in Dreamhouse is about not taking the life you have for granted.[6]
