Career
Pre-debut
Thunder was born in Busan, South Korea but grew up in the Philippines, where his eldest sister, Sandara Park, achieved nationwide fame in 2004 after winning 2nd place in a talent search reality competition. He first appeared on national television when he attended the finale with his mother. Later on, as his sister began her hectic activities as a celebrity, a crew from one of South Korea's biggest TV agencies recorded her daily life in the documentary My Name Is Sandara Park. This marked Thunder's first ever appearance on Korean TV.
Sandara's eventual decision to pursue activities in their home country led to their family's return to Korea in 2007. By this time, Thunder had finished secondary education in the Philippines. It was later on revealed in a magazine interview that he had originally decided to pursue a professional career as a soccer player, specifically as a midfielder. He gave up and instead started auditioning for entertainment agencies, one of which was JYP Entertainment. He had taken dancing workshops offered by Sandara's home network back in the Philippines.
Thunder eventually became a trainee under LOEN Entertainment, where he met singer IU. He appeared in IU's debut MV for her song "Mia" and was also seen in a couple of self videos with her wherein they sing Big Bang's "Lies" and Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry."
MBLAQ (2009 to 2014)
After training under Rain and J.Tune Entertainment, Thunder became a member of South Korean quintet male group MBLAQ, serving as a vocalist, lead rapper, lead dancer and also considered as MBLAQ's visual. The group debuted on October 9, 2009 at Rain's Legend of Rainism concert where they performed various songs from their then-unreleased single album Just BLAQ. Their performance was met with praise, with many concert spectators and fans considering them to be the next TVXQ.[17][18] MBLAQ's first single, "Oh Yeah", was released to the public through a music video on October 14, 2009 with their debut single album, Just BLAQ releasing on the same day.[19] MBLAQ made their broadcast debut with the song "Oh Yeah" on Mnet's M! Countdown.[20]
The group has starred in various South Korean variety shows as guests as well as in their own variety shows like Mnet's MBLAQ - The Art of Seduction, MBC's MBLAQ's Idol Army, Mnet's Sesame Player and KBS's Hello Baby Season 5.
MBLAQ made their Japanese debut on May 3, 2011 with an event held at the Kanagawa Lazona Kawasaki Plaza which gathered a reported 10, 000 fans. A day later, on May 4, they released their first Japanese album Your Luv which immediately reached first position of the Oricon Daily Charts, selling more that 11,000 copies.[21][22]
