Thisayanvilai is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,^[1] Tisaiyanvilai had a population of 19,557. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%. Tisaiyanvilai has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 73%. In Tisaiyanvilai, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Of the late, many from the district immigrate there, in search of better employment, making it an immigration hub.

Origin of the Name Thisiayanvillai: This name consists of two words..Thisaiyan and Villai (Villa is a farm house in Latin and Vilai is a Farm land in Tamil). There are records available to show how this village derived its name from the book written by Alex Cruz Muthiya "MANA VEERA VAZHANADU". Manavazha Veera Nadu was one among the five vazhanadus of the late Pandiyas. The last ruler of Manaveeravazhanadu was one (Manatachia alais Aabathukuthai) meaning (savior at the dead the end). along with other few chieftains. He ruled the Manaveeravazhanadu along with four other valzha nadu kings. After their demise they have seen worshiped by locals as deities (Anju Veetu Samy). The ruler had his capital at arasoor as the domicile of the kings.

Near the kings residence at arasoor there were quarters of the warriors (in Tamil they are known as kavalars). They defend the country from the four corners that is the four directions east, west, north and south. Therefore their living place was called as Tisai kavalar villai. That means form land of warriors of four directions. To prove this there are evident hamlets at the four corner of Tisaiyanvilai. They are kiraikaranthattu, mottainthattu, idachithattu pallanthattu at north, west, east and south respectively. The thattu in Tamil denotes the English word plate or watch tower. From the four hamlets it can be assumed that there were the watch towers of the kavalars is of mana veeru vazha nadu at Tisaiyanvilai and made it to be called as thisai kavalr vilai. Hence the town Tisaiyanvilai was once called as Tisai kavalar villai and by colloquial words it was later turned into Tisaiyanvilai (i.e. : Maruvu in Tamil )

By virtue of the findings in the book Mana Veera Vazha Nadu, Tisaiyanvilai was the position of army of the country. There are various nearby other villages name would constitute the existence of existence of the past mana veera vazha nadu and Thisai Kavalar Vilai They are Thoppu Villai (the position of the spys. Now turned into Appuvilai.) Mannarpuram (the agricultural land of king.) Aayankulam (place where customs and exicise were collected). Maniankudi (the person who had his office at this place). Ovari in the past it was Obirpattanam( a port of the kingdom of Mana Veera Vazha Nadu) Karaichutthu Puthur( a new town emerged near the port). Mittatharkulam (a place of people next to the king) Patarikattivilai (a place of storage and wherhouse of the kingdom). Kottaikarunkulam the border trench of country mana veera vazha nadu.

Thus Tisaiyanvillai was Thisai Kavalar Villai in the past. Later turned colloquially into Tisaiyanvilai.

Connectivity

The town is well connected with the district capital Tirunelveli by NH 7 road. Nagercoil and Tiruchendur bus always available. The nearest port and airport is in Tuticorin.

Education

There are many schools in Thisayanvilai. Daniel Thomas Group of Schools, http://www.holyredeemerhsstsyvilai.org/ Holy Redeemers higher secondary school, Sri Ramakrishna higher secondary school, samariya thuya yoovan higher secondary school, Jayarajesh matriculation, Malavidthya school, Hinthu primary school and Stella Mary's Girls High School are among them.^[2] The panchayat town also has an engineering college named as VV college of Engineering^[3] and one government arts and science college named as Mano Government Arts and Science College.

Industry

Being nearer to mineral-rich beaches, Thisayanvilai has one of the India's largest Garnet and Ilmenite exporting company named VV Minerals.^[4]
