Description

The story written by Jon Klassen is about a little fish that takes a hat from a bigger fish in his point of view. In the dark ocean as he races to escape to his secret garden. The illustrations by Jon Klassen; The colorings are dark and reflect the dark ending of the story. The age range are for children 4-8 and It is a hard cover with 40 pages. The publisher is Candlewick; first edition (October 9, 2012). The dimension is 11.5 x 0.4 x 8.2 inches. Klassen uses digital drawing as well as watercolor to create artwork that is simple and intricate.

Synopsis

This dark tale is bold and to the point. The illustration brings the story to life strewn with a black backdrop. Not much dialog is needed in this story, it is very easy to see what is happening as the story unfolds and comes to a jaw dropping halt. It is terrifying and silent at the same time delivers a tough lesson with a harsh end. Among the ocean's depth a tiny fish juts into view he quickly see's something he likes and precedes in a larcenous manner. It is a hat worn by a bigger fish that he believes will look better on himself. You can see (cover art that it shows a tiny fish wearing a little derby hat)the tiny fish steals and swims away marveling on how good it looks on himself. Awakened is the sleeping giant, the bigger fish. He realizes his hat is gone and ensues to find out what happened to it. The little fish swims along in love with his new hat in hopes to make it to his secret pasture.

Critical Reception

This Is Not My Hat is a award winning childrens storybook The NY Times says author Jon Klassen "One of the most widely anticipated Caldecott Medal contenders of 2012".[1] The book according to Caldecott honor book "shows just enough restraint in its pacing to allow the reader the delicious sense of being in the story without being in control of the story."[2] Winner of the prestigious Governor General’s Award for Illustration. Jon Klassen has worked as an illustrator for feature animated films, music videos, and editorial pieces.[3]The result is a story that speaks twice as loud as any other-one voice the illustrations, the other the words.[4]
